چکیده

Shortly after streptomycin was introduced in the treatment of tuberculosis, two major obstacles to its value as a therapeutic agent became apparent. These were, vestibular damage and development of bacterial resistance. With the reduction in the daily dosage from 2 gm. and higher, to 1 gm. and later to 0.5 gm., serious vestibular damage has been eliminated. However, development of bacterial resistance, which is apparently due to duration of treatment rather than to dosage, remains for the present the most serious threat to successful streptomycin therapy in tuberculosis. With the appearance of resistant forms of tubercle bacilli, streptomycin ceases to be an effective therapeutic agent not only for the individual patient but also for those to whom he may transmit the disease. Youmans and Wffliston’ found that when a group of mice were injected intravenously with 0.1 mg. of a culture of tubercle bacilli isolated from a patient with pulmonary tuberculosis, streptomycin bad a marked suppressive effect on the infection produced in the animals. On the other hand when a group of mice were injected in the same manner with a culture of tubercle bacilli from the same patient after he was treated with streptomycin, the infection resulting from it was uninfluenced by the drug. Bogen2 related the case of a nurse who contracted tuberculosis while working with streptomycin treated patients. Tubercle bacilli recovered from this case were resistant to 1000 micrograms per cc. on original isolation. It is obvious why the study of bacterial resistance to streptomycin and specifically the search for measures to prevent it are occupying a very prominent place in this field of investigation. The theory behind the development of bacterial resistance to streptomycin is based on the knowledge that probably every case of tuberculosis harbors different varieties of tubercle bacilli. By

Synergistic Effect of Silver Nanoparticles and Streptomycin Antibiotic on the MexX Gene Expression of Pump Efflux System in Drug-Resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa Strains

Introduction: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most important infectious agents in humans, which is difficult to control in hospitals due to its resistance to various antibiotics. Efflux pump systems play an important role in the drug resistance of this bacterium to a variety of antibiotics. This study aimed to determine the antimicrobial synergistic effect of silver nanoparticles and the a...

Multidrug Resistance in Infants and Children

Bacterial infections may cause disease and death. Infants and children are often subject to bacterial infections. Antimicrobials kill bacteria protecting the infected patients andreducing the risk of morbidity and mortality caused by bacteria. The antibiotics may lose their antibacterial activity when they become resistant to a bacteria. The resistance to different antibiotics in a bacteria is ...

Plant agricultural streptomycin formulations do not carry antibiotic resistance genes.

Streptomycin is used in plant agriculture for bacterial disease control, particularly against fire blight in pome fruit orchards. Concerns that this may increase environmental antibiotic resistance have led to bans or restrictions on use. Experience with antibiotic use in animal feeds raises the possible influence of formulation-delivered resistance genes. We demonstrate that agricultural strep...

Evaluation of endurance against antibiotics in the western blotting shrimp propagation centers on pathogens of vibrio

This study was conducted to evaluate the resistance to antibiotics in the western white shrimp propagation centers on pathogens of Vibrio bacteria. In Iran, the most important bacteria in the shrimp are the vibrio species. In Bushehr Province, due to the high efficacy of erythromycin antibiotics, streptomycyne oxytracycline and tremitoprim in bacterial diseases, were selected as the species. Th...

Mechanisms of streptomycin resistance: selection of mutations in the 16S rRNA gene conferring resistance.

Chromosomally acquired streptomycin resistance is frequently due to mutations in the gene encoding the ribosomal protein S12, rpsL. The presence of several rRNA operons (rrn) and a single rpsL gene in most bacterial genomes prohibits the isolation of streptomycin-resistant mutants in which resistance is mediated by mutations in the 16S rRNA gene (rrs). Three strains were constructed in this inv...
